Morning itinerary
Visits to the synagogues and places of Jewish interest on Parliament Lane and Irish Town, where the wealthy Jewish merchants used to live — and where the ship chandlers supplied the ships carrying Jews who had fled the pogroms, sailing from Odessa to the United States and later Argentina. Some of these businesses still exist today.
We pass the juncture between Market Lane and Irish Town, where kosher meat was sold in the 1750s, then come to John Mackintosh Square, the Auction Square from the 18th to the 20th centuries.
Lunch can be had at either of the local kosher restaurants.
Afternoon itinerary
Next to the Square is the City Hall, built by the first President of the Jewish Community in 1790. Inside is an exhibition of Gibraltarian artists, among them Jacob Azagury, one of the first Gibraltarian Jewish artists.
From there we visit the Gibraltar Exchange — where the Parliament of Gibraltar now meets — built in 1817, with its record of the many Jewish merchants who contributed to the building, and the memorial to Solomon Benzecry, who died a hero in the First World War.
At each synagogue you’ll hear its history and the story of the Jewish Community of Gibraltar through the ages. The tour ends back at the main Piazza. To add a visit to the Gibraltar Museum, choose the add-on below.
